Grant
Supports Adult Literacy Programs
Posted 28 October 2008
Northeast Iowa Community College's
Adult Literacy Program recently received a Community Foundation of
Greater Dubuque (CFGD) grant to improve the transition of adult
learners from literacy classes into college-level coursework.
The college's Adult Literacy Program - Transitioning of
Adult Learners initiative will use the funding to study
current processes and best practices to improve
student educational success rates in NICC's General
Educational Development (GED), high school
completion, general Adult Basic Education, and
English Language Learning areas.
The $1,000 in grant funding will serve adult learners in the eight
counties in NICC's district area.
The National Adult Literacy Survey shows almost a quarter of adult
America functions at the lowest literacy level restricting them to
tasks that involve short and uncomplicated text, like that on a bank
deposit slip. Many of these adults have not completed a high school
education and/or are non-English speaking immigrants.
"Individuals who are limited in literacy and basic educational skills
often find it challenging to pursue personal and employment goals. NICC
is pleased with CFGD's endorsement toward improving services to adult
literacy students with the intent of improving their educational
opportunities," said Amy Esterhuizen, NICC district
adult literacy director.
The CFGD works to improve the quality of life in the Dubuque area by
evaluating and addressing community issues, building a permanent
charitable endowment and connecting donors to critical needs of the
community.
NICC's Adult Literacy Program serves adult learners with reading,
writing and math skills below college level, and adult learners with
limited English language proficiency.
