Gov.
Culver Announces General Dardis To Retire
Posted 30 October 2008
Governor Chet Culver announced this
week that Major General Ron Dardis will retire as Adjutant General of
the Iowa National Guard. General Dardis’ retirement comes after nearly
43 years of service to the Iowa National Guard.
"Hero can be an overused word, but it is an understatement in
describing the service of General Dardis to the people of Iowa. His
calm under pressure and his wealth of experience have served our state
and nation well for many years,” said Governor Culver. "I join with all
Iowans in expressing my sincere appreciation and gratitude for General
Dardis' dedication and commitment."
General Dardis will remain on duty until the new Adjutant General has
been named and a suitable transition period can be completed. Governor
Culver is currently engaged in the selection process for a new Adjutant
General.
Governor Culver commended General Dardis for his extraordinary
leadership of the Iowa National Guard, including the training,
mobilizing and deployment of more than 12,000 Soldiers and Airmen for
active duty in support of the global war on terror and maintaining 100%
strength during the Guard’s highest operational period since the Civil
War.
“I have been honored and humbled to serve alongside the outstanding men
and women of the Iowa National Guard. They are truly dedicated Iowans
and great Americans,” said General Dardis. “One of the highlights of my
career has been the opportunity to visit our Soldiers and Airmen in
combat zones and also here at home during natural disasters and other
emergencies. And being able to present these brave men and women with
Purple Hearts, Bronze Stars, and other combat badges for their
extraordinary and selfless service to their country has been one of my
greatest honors.”
Following the floods of 2008, Governor Culver appointed General Dardis
to serve as the Chairman of the Rebuild Iowa Advisory Commission; he
will continue to serve in that post.
“General Dardis was one of the first people I turned to in order to
lead our efforts to rebuild Iowa after this year’s historic storms, and
we are all fortunate that he will continue to serve in this important
role for our state,” added Governor Culver.
