Change in Policy
to Help Kids at Oelwein
Posted 04 November 2008
Members of the Oelwein Community
School Board are changing a long-standing school policy which addresses
head and children.
For years, the district has dismissed students from school when they
have been found to have head lice. The school has been criticized for
the practice by the Iowa department of Health and the Department of
Education.
Medical officials have determined there is no reason to exclude those
children from school.
After meeting recently with medical health care staff of the Oelwein
Community School District, members of the school board decided last
week to change the policy.
In its place will be procedures to help care for children infected with
head lice and guidelines to work with parents to help resolve the
situations.
In other business, the Oelwein School Board received a report on
the certified count and projections for the future from Superintendent
Jim Patera. The report showed that enrollment in the district is down
by 24 students this school year. Even with the decline, with a 4%
allowable growth for next year, the school will see approximately
$170,000 in new money.
That won't be enough, however, to meet obligation contracts. The
district expects a shortfall of $380,000 due to the decline in
enrollment. Members of the board will be investigating ways to increase
revenue or decrease spending to make up the difference.
In personnel matters, the school board accepted the resignation of
elementary instrumental music teacher Jaci Ratcliff.
