Warm Temperatures
Good for Harvest
Posted 04 November 2008
Temperatures yesterday, Monday,
Nov. 3, tied a 30-year-old record in Dubuque as the mercury reached and
unseasonable warm 73 degrees. Warm temperatures were recorded
throughout Northeast Iowa and the region.
The normal temperature for this week is around 50 degrees.
Forecasters expect the warm weather — with highs in the 70s — to
continue through Wednesday of this week. A change will be in the air
Thursday, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms.
Precipitation chances remain good through the weekend and forecasters
expect high temperatures to dip into the upper 30s by Sunday, Nov. 9.
The warm weather is benefiting local crops and facilitating this year's
harvest, according to Iowa Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey.
Northey says the warm sun and dry breeze in Iowa over the last week
have helped dry out fields and allowed farmers to start getting back to
harvest activities.
The secretary says much of northern Iowa is in pretty good shape with
almost all of the beans and half the corn harvested to date.
Northey says southern Iowa still has a significant amount of beans and
more than three-quarters of the corn to get out of the field, but that
if the weather holds up that will help.
