Iowa To Receive $6.6M for Disaster Response Efforts
Posted 06 November 2008
Governor Chet Culver announced yesterday, Wednesday, Nov. 5, that $6.6 million in federal funds has been identified and is in the final stages of federal approval to cover the costs of the response efforts by the Iowa National Guard.

During the state’s severe storms, a record number of Iowa National Guard soldiers were activated for a wide variety of safety missions, from sandbagging to assisting local responders in a number of ways. The Governor said these dollars will be used to reimburse the Iowa Department of Public Defense.

“During this year’s historic severe weather, the men and women of the Iowa National Guard answered the call of Iowans,” Culver stressed. “More than 4,000 Guard members helped protect our homes, businesses, and communities – the largest deployment of the Iowa Guard since the Civil War.  The heroic efforts of our soldiers, as well as all first responders and law enforcement officials, helped our state meet the challenges we faced, and all Iowans are grateful for their service.”

Federal funds will pay 90% of the $7.4 million for the Iowa National Guard’s response efforts and state dollars will cover the remaining 10%. Normally the state agency would pay an additional 15%, but because of the Governor’s actions to have FEMA fund 90% of the project, the state will save $1.1 million.

This is one of an expected 9,000 projects that will be identified under the State/FEMA Public Assistance program designed to help public and certain non-profit agencies rebuild Iowa infrastructure and pay for response efforts. Eligible entities in 84 counties may qualify for public assistance by submitting a request to the State and FEMA.  To date, the State and FEMA have obligated more than $409 million in federal funds for public assistance for projects in Iowa.
