Fire Department Receives Funding
Posted 14 November 2008
The West Union Fire Department has
received funding from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's
Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.
The program helps Iowa communities purchase firefighting equipment,
improve facilities, and implement health and wellness programs.
Fire departments can submit proposals to receive funds for new fire
trucks, hoses, protective equipment, rescue vehicles, and training for
emergency personnel.
The West Union Fire Department will use the $10,745 they received for
operations and safety.
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program places a particular
emphasis on rural fire departments--at least 55% of the program's
funding must go to fire departments that use volunteer firefighters.
This means smaller towns are not competing against cities like Des
Moines.
West Union was one of 21 Iowa fire departments to receive grants.
