Candle Light Walk at Cedar Rock State Park
Posted 1 June 2009
Come celebrate the 142nd Birthday of one of America’s most famous architects, Frank Lloyd Wright at one of his own designs, Cedar Rock. Saturday, June, 6th a special evening tour allows guests a chance to see the Walter Residence after dark. Experiencing Cedar Rock after hours is a unique opportunity that few forget! Frank Lloyd Wright designed Cedar Rock in 1946 for Lowell and Agnes Walter. This gorgeous estate offers panoramic views from high on the east bank of the legendary Wapsipinicon River.

The home is beautiful during the daylight hours and amazing at night. Some guests have even commented that it resembles starship Enterprise when viewed after dark. Take some time during your visit to enjoy complimentary popcorn popped fresh and served at the fireside, as you visit with your friends. This event will begin at 7:00pm and wrap up around 10:00pm. Bring a jacket, umbrella, your camera, maybe some bug repellant, and a friend or two if you’d like.

The home is created mainly from brick, wood, and glass, which affords guests spectacular views of the river as well as the woodlands that surround it. The grounds include a Wright designed entrance gate, Usonian home, river pavilion, and council fire area for outdoor entertaining. Guests are encouraged to view the home and grounds at their leisure. Volunteers and site staff are posted throughout the grounds to answer any questions you may have.

This unique and exciting annual event is a fund-raiser for Cedar Rock. The house can be found just outside Quasqueton at 2611 Quasqueton Diagonal Blvd (Buchanan Co. Road W-35), Independence. This State Park is funded solely through the Walter Charitable Trust Fund. Donations are never required, but are needed and appreciated. A $3.00 donation will be graciously accepted. For more information call the visitor center at (319) 934-3572, or e-mail the park at Cedar_Rock@dnr.iowa.gov.
